Landscape Restoration, Screening, and Animation for On-Site Facility Relocation Associated with Landfill Expansion

Civil Engineering, Environmental Services, Landscape Architecture, 3D Animation

Client: Confidential Client | Location: Mills County, Iowa

Due to an expansion of an existing landfill in Mills County, Iowa, the site’s landfill scale house, business office, truck staging, and maintenance facility needed to be relocated. The new location is adjacent to US Rt. 34, which raised concerns among local residents about the visual impact of being so close to the highway. The client retained Weaver Consultants Group (WCG) to prepare a 3D animated movie illustrating the effectiveness of a 10-foot tall berm and landscape enhancements to screen the landfill operations. The screening berm was designed with shade ornamental, and evergreen trees, along with shortgrass prairie and Iowa Eco Pollinator areas. WCG’s environmental team was instrumental in acquiring a 404 permit from the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to relocate Silver Creek. Other team members processed a Conditional Letter of Map Revision (CLOMR) to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), conducted extensive soil testing, and relocated a historic railroad culvert for the state’s historical society.
